Cut Waste -Improve Competitiveness (CWIC)
CWIC is a free waste minimisation service for businesses in Northamptonshire. Many waste minimisation measures cost nothing, but yield big results. Where investment is needed, average payback periods for such initiatives are measured in months, not years. Savings of around £1,000 per employee are typically made through resource efficiency programmes such as CW-IC.

Waste costs more than you may realise. When you consider the materials, the costs of treatment, energy and wasted labour, you'll find the real price tag on waste is often 5-20 times the cost of disposal.
Case Studies
- A small, Northamptonshire-based food and drink company contacted CWIC, and has diverted 300 tonnes of wheat waste away from landfill by selling it to a local farmer for use as animal feed, saving the company £4,500 a year in disposal costs.
- A manufacturing company received an environmental audit through CWIC and as a result introduced segregation and recycling of wood waste produced on site. The waste comes in two forms, wood offcuts and sawdust. The sawdust material is sent for reuse as animal bedding etc. and the offcuts are chipped often for kindling. Wood waste totals around 800 tonnes for the company and this has been successfully diverted from landfill.
- A national 40-man consulting and training company, which implemented a number of initiatives around paper use, yielded cost savings of £40,000 a year.
- A large wholesale/retail company achieved net savings of £33,050 in the first year and £106,700 a year thereafter, by installing simple, low-cost water savings devices.
- A Northamptonshire wholesale/retail company has made significant reductions in their environmental impact with CWIC's help by recycling their waste and diverting it from landfill. Much of the waste that the company produces comes in the form of packaging materials from the transportation of goods. The company now has a total recycling rate of 37%. This means that total waste diverted from landfill amounts to 415.35 tonnes and there is scope for the company to increase this through greater segregation of waste.
